Another revision of the
Computer Audio Research Laboratory
(CARL)
software distribution tape is now available.
It contains over 115 programs and libraries for research and production in
digital audio and computer music.
As in the past, the software is distributed free of charge, and is
in the public domain.*
.FS
*A $100.00 distribution fee is charged to offset distribution costs;
recipients must sign the enclosed
Software Distribution Agreement. The Agreement is not a license, but
a waiver of liability. Users must not transfer software to third parties
without permission, and must credit CARL where appropriate.

The programs are for signal processing, sound synthesis/analysis,
sound file management, and other supporting
functions, developed by the CARL staff using
a VAX11/780, running the Berkeley 4.2 Distribution
of the UNIX operating system.
.PP
Other highlights of the release are,
.IP \(bu
\fIpvoc\fP, a phase vocoder,
an analysis/synthesis tool for time varying spectra.
.IP \(bu
\fIcmusic\fP,
a software synthesis program in the MUSIC V tradition,
.IP \(bu
\fIcsound\fP
a collection of programs implementing
a file system designed for manipulating sound sample data,
.sp
plus numerous signal processing and other miscellaneous programs (see
attached partial listing of programs).
.PP
Additional recent features include
automatic passing of data
.I properties
between communicating programs,
extension and regularization of sample data i/o subroutines,
completely revised documentation, including
manual pages for all programs and numerous tutorials.
The
.B csound
file system
has been extensively developed,
and now supports non-contiguous files, making it simpler to use.**
.FS
**
The current release of csound is for 4.2bsd.
.FE
.PP
Considerable attention has been given to streamlining the installation of
CARL software and documentation, which is largely automatic and
self-configuring.
With few exceptions,
programs are written entirely in the
.I C
programming language, providing the flexibility and comprehensibility
of high level language,
without unduly sacrificing speed.
.PP
Also included is a
device driver written at CARL for the Digital Sound Corp.
System 200 D/A and A/D converters. This driver supports random block
level, single duplex control of the System 200 unit.
.PP
The tape incorporates all files and documentation necessary to install
these programs on the target system. The tape is available in only
one format, the standard UNIX
.I tar,
1600bpi.
.PP
A ring-bound, photo-reduced copy of the CARL Startup Kit
is included with each tape.
.PP
To order a tape,
a copy of the enclosed ``Software Distribution Agreement'' must be executed
(unless you already have executed such an agreement with us before; please
note this on the enclosed Agreement form).
Execute a draft to ``The Regents of the University of California'',
for $100.00, and mail it with the signed Agreement Form to:
