We've received the official 'expiration/termination of the Xerox university
grants program' letter. The program officially ends (no reprieve this time)
on May 31, 1989. On that date our hardware maintenance agreement expires on
the XNS file server (MCS/XDE/etc), print server (Pterodactyl), Clearinghouse &
boot server (MSOB:) as well as 15 1108/9s.

The only piece of equipment that is a candidate for our continuing outside
hardware support on is the XNS file server. Its heaviest use is still from
the MCS/Oncocin users with MENTOR coming in second, the rest of the KSL third
and Brutlag (including his MIS students) a close fourth. I expect the current
MCS/Oncocin and KSL use to decrease, the MENTOR use to remain constant and
quite possibly the Brutlag use to increase.

Last year when we thought the XUGP was going to expire we didn't get anything
resolved by the expiration date, fortunately Xerox came to the rescue and
extended the agreement another year. According to last year's quote from
Scott Reid, the yearly cost of an service agreement is $10,500 for the
hardware and $500 for the software--assume this has gone up (there was a price
break if you got a three year contract). I don't plan to get a new quote
unless there is serious consideration of paying for a full service contract.
A time and materials contract is also available, I don't know its cost.

In the last year, as far as I'm aware, there have been no hardware failure
requiring a Xerox service call on the file server. I plan to try to get them
out before May 31st to replace all the filters and other such consumables. I
have also contacted Joan Phillips again about getting Services 11 Boot Service
before the expiration date (they messed up and sent File Service twice).

The expiration letter also mentions Xerox's 'agressive trade-in program' to
upgrade 8014s (1108s) to 6085s (1186s). I'm looking into that not that we
want to buy 1186s but it may mean that our 1108s have value (as trade-ins) to
those who do. Of course, the program is so 'agressive' that they haven't
bothered to return any of my telephone calls (they do admit the person I'm
trying to reach actually works there) but I guess when you make up your own
spelling of 'aggressive' you can define it to mean anything you want.

PS: I will be away for a week or so surrounding May 31st.

PPS: Random thought: Why not pay the Dorado disk contract up to May 31st
(another 1.5 months from the current expiration date) and have everything from
Xerox expire together?
