...there are many shareware and free text adventures availiable on bbs's
and through the interactive fiction archive site ("if-archive" at ftp.gmd.de,
if'n you've got ftp access).  Try something written with TADS -- Unnkulia,
Rylvania, Deep Space Drifter -- or AGT -- Multi-Dimensional Thief is my 
favorite of those.  A friend of mine has had good luck in configuring speech
software to run these adventure games...
