My Webster's 9th New Collegiate Dictionary says:

Deus ex machina... New Latin for 'a god from a machine', translation
of the Greek _ _
             theos ek mechanes

As an aside, I can't help but think of Woody Allen's hilarious play,
"God, A Play", found in _Without Feathers_. There's also recursion in it,
and 'stepping out of the system' stuff.
