CMANA also announces an educational fellowship Dr. M.L. Vasanthakumari Fellowship - a CMANA Endowment in honor of the great MLV. ================ We are delighted that Smt. M.S.Subbalakshmi and Smt. D.K.Pattammal have agreed to accept CMANA's Lifetime Achievement Award SANGEETHASAAGARA. On this occasion, we also remember the late Dr. M.L. Vasanthakumari by instituting a Fellowship in her honor. For 23 years, the Carnatic Music Association of North America has functioned in a spirit of propagating, preserving and nurturing Carnatic music. It has introduced many new faces to the North American musical scene and supported the learning of music by children and adults in North America through a wide variety of activities. We approach Carnatic music not just as a vehicle of entertainment, but as a great cultural treasure that we must preserve through all future generations. The awards we set up are therefore to celebrate and acknowledge the contributions of those in nurturing this fine art and to inspire future generations to follow in their foot steps. The Sangeethasaagara award and the Fellowship are on behalf of all music lovers to these great musicians for a life time of service, and constitute our felicitation of their achievements. Like children who offer their salutations to their parents and elders, we offer these to them, knowing fully well that they neither seek nor need yet another honor. Through these we honor not just a set of individuals but the larger culture and cultural heritage we are proud to share as people of Indian origin. Through our service that soon will reach 25 splendid years, we hope to have earned the stature to felicitate such great persons in public. Just so that we may not appear impertinent, to establish an award we waited long enough until senior musicians and respected members of the music fraternity themselves suggested to us that we must institute a high honor of our own to inspire future generations to reach great heights. We established published criteria for the awards and instituted a processes for choosing the most worthy. T.V. For 23 years, the Carnatic Music Association of North America has functioned

The Sangeethasaagara award and the Fellowship are on behalf of all
