Off topic for this newsgroup, but if the Amstrad 2086 is a true IBM
compatible, it should be able to use any version of MSDOS up to 6.22.
Older versions are recommended because they take less memory.  You can
also use Freedos from www.freedos.org or DR-DOS from ftp.lineo.com.

Linux won't run on a 286 computer.
You need an OS to download files and make boot floppies, but the boot floppies
should have what you need to set up the hard disk.
