MY>OK, go to the Minix web page (www.minix.org) and follow the link
MY>for "Minix 2.0.0". The second half of that page contains several
MY>Minix distributions (i386, i86, xt) from which you need to download
MY>the "xt" set.

Why would I not want the i86, my XT is an 8086? Am I better off with
the XT set?

MY>I put them on 720K floppies using "rawrite", but they are intended

Hmmm... never tried writing a disk image to the wrong size disk. I would've
thought that would be a problem.

MY>> My guess is you manipulated the files on another system first
MY>> then moved it to the laptop - yes?

MY>No. I simply downloaded them onto this machine and used "rawrite"
MY>to write them straight out to floppies.

Sounds good. I'm getting tired of supposed 8086 apps that require a '386
to uncompress and configure (I have one but it just annoys me).

MY>Not that I've had a chance to do much more than boot the system up
MY>yet and log in as "root". It seems to work OK though.

If it boots it's a start. 8)

MY>Heh, heh....I learnt 'C' in 1984 ("Deep Blue C" on my Atari 8-bit)
MY>and I've pretty much stuck to assembly language ever since. If I
MY>have to use a high level language my personal preference is for a
MY>good structured BASIC or some derivative of PASCAL (PL/1 looks nice
MY>but I haven't done any more than skim the manual yet).

I also lean towards ASM but just never seem to get the time to get really
good at it. Small utility programs etc. but never a really impressive
app of any kind.

I spent so much time with BASIC I won't give it up. I still use it for
'quickie' apps and even wrote an ISAM database for cataloging my archives
in BASIC. Much fun there. 8)

Yes, well I'm using my XT to peer to my '286 right now and doing some testing
of 16bit apps for the Inet but when the dust settles my next project will be
MINIX. I've saved your information and I thank you. Who knows maybe I'll
do MINIX sooner than I thought?
