This is incorrect. Linux can easily live with a DDO organized disk.
Just use a newer kernel (DDO support was added in 1.3.35+), like a 2.0.27 .

Booting any OS from cyl. > 1023 is a no-go . This is a limitation of the
PC's BIOS, not of the used operating system, just as you explained. 
The posster will have to make sure that the kernel and the loader 
program both do reside within the first 1023 cylinders.
