If you add hd=bios to the boot parameters it ought to work. The 1.7.1 bios
hard disk driver is supposed to be usable from 16 bit or 32 bit protected 
mode.

hd=ps might work, I am not sure of the status of it. As of the test 
version 1.7.0 the ps hard disk driver was deliberately disabled because
Kees was not able to test it.

You have to enter an hd= parameter with your machine and the distribution 
ROOT disk. Since it has several drivers compiled in it will try (and fail)
to run the first one,  which is the at_wini driver, if it doesn't find an
hd parameter in the environment. That is probably what happened on your 
first attempt.
