The jjeeddiitt application is a simple, customisable X Windows
text editor. It should start quickly enough that you can
use it comfortably for short email notes and such light
editing tasks, but you can also adapt it to more elaborate
applications such as editing source code.

It is written in wwiisshh, an X Windows scripting language
based on the Tk toolkit and the Tcl scripting library (all
three by John Ousterhout of Berkeley), and this makes it
extremely flexible and configurable. Hooks and prefer-
ences are provided to allow you to customise text bind-
ings--the keystrokes you use to edit text in the text win-
dow--and general aspects of the application's behaviour.
For instance, if you find you frequently need to insert a
list of all the users on your system into a file you're
editing, sorted alphabetically, you can add a menu command
(or a keystroke, or both) to do that.

Detailed documentation describing how to use jjeeddiitt is
available online via the jjhheellpp application. If jjhheellpp is
not installed at your site, you can read the file
`jedit.jhelp', included with the distribution, which con-
tains the source for the online help.
