legba:$ export TERM=foo
legba:$ gnuclient -nw

simply returns me to the shell prompt, no error message, nothing.
Then, doing the following:

legba:$ export TERM=xterm
legba:$ gnuclient -nw

drops me back to the prompt as well, no error message, nothing.
Restarting gnuserv at this point doesn't help, I've now completely
lost the ability to connect to the session in tty mode (gnuclient
alone still works, popping up an x frame).

Can anyone else duplicate this? It's quite consistent here.
