I've found the reason for my problems with .netrc and efs. I'd an old
entry in my .netrc, which had cd's and bin's and so on, but no 'macdef
init'! This missing 'macdef init' had caused the problems. Therefore
it was more a bug in my personal .netrc as in efs. But the mystery
was, that the problem occured with every ftp server not only with the
one with the bad entry - and this behaviour is different to the one of
ange ftp and different to the use of ftp in a normal shell.

I think that it would be fine if efs would produce better error
messages in such cases.

Heiko
