Thanks.  In the good ol' XEmacs habit, I vote for ripping them off.

If there are no cries against, I volunteer to implement this -- only
the value will be console-local.

(yes, I know I'll probably regret it as soon as I see the relevant
part of XEmacs, but what the heck.)
