I started the editor with xemacs-mule -nw -f vm. I used
make-frame-on-display to make a frame on another display and I
used that for awhile then deleted it. Much later and after much
use of the editor, I tried to open a directory with dired.

C-x C-f /local/src/emacs/xemacs/src/

I see

Loading dired... Error: Couldn't find per display information

and I'm out of XEmacs. Modified buffers were not autosaved. The
tty was restored to a normal state, so the the editor didn't hit
with a SIGKILL or something like that. There's no core file, nor
was there time to write one. It dumped me out very quickly.
