When I try to customize non-customized faces (such as "default" or
"modeline"), I get a buffer that looks like the following:

This is a customization buffer.
Push RET or click mouse-2 on the word _help_ for more information.

And the following is spewed into the minibuffer:

"format specifier %d doesn't match argument type"
