I use icomplete too, it's a nice package.  The same thing happens
with the buffer selection commands.  Jens is right, you might actually
want a new face called `defa' and a proper fix might be making some
visual difference between a required match (as in `M-x some-command',
and the context where typing something new is allowed as in this case).

I don't think the action of icomplete should be changed.
