Yeah, I saw that one, and another set of posting about some changes made
to something in VC (I think?). And a there's been some work on changes
to popper.el for XEmacs, with the hope of future inclusion.

I thought it might be a really good time to ask, as Hrvoje just spent a
lot of work patching up things to use custom, and incremented the
version numbers by 1.[1] If this was done on code actively being
supported, it'd be quite possible that there is already a version with
that number out there, or that the "real" maintainer might want it
numbered differently. And I know I'd get irked at someone changing my
code and releasing it with the version number upped by 1.[2] Maybe we
should tag them something like: Version: <orig#>-XE<#>, if we are
locally supporting it. Where the # for xemacs isn't 20.1, but just
something like 1,2,3.

The more and more packages we can make work in both emacsen the less and
less work we have to do synching things all the time. This suggests
getting changes back to authors. Even if we can't do that (like they
refuse to support something XEmacs specific), having original version
numbers will help us potentially synch up in the future. And if no one
wants to support it in the future, maybe we should be phasing it out.

Footnotes:
[1] A task for which I am very thankful to him. :) And in this
particular case the packages aren't supported externally, so there isn't
any real problem. It just caught my attention as something we might
want to be sure to check in the future.

[2] Even when it's under the GPL.
