In every case I've run across where this symptom has been observed it
has been due to a misconfigured /etc/hosts. It seems especially
prevalent in Linux. Make sure that your /etc/hosts looks like:

127.0.0.1	localhost
a.b.c.d your-real-host-name

and DISPLAY is set to `:0'. If this is indeed the case with your
setup, I'm about ready to put this into the FAQ.

Note that XEmacs' `home system' is now Linux, everything I can test
gets tested under Linux first.
