I'm just trying footnote.el and I'm very impressed.  The only thing
that bothers me[1] is the demand on message mode.  As a VM user, I had
never seen message mode until today.  Ignoring the merit of
message-mode[2], I fail to see[3] any reason for the dependency[4].

[2]  which is plenty neat.

[3]  perhaps from laziness.

[4]  it would be neat to have this in fundamental mode as well.
