I constantly get stuck with the problem to which William
refers. Often I am working on something and want to leave a rather long
help screen in on window while I finish typing in function arguments.
Then I often hit C-x 1 or similar. The next time I invoke help and hit
'q' I get thrown back into a window configuration that could be hours
old.

In emacs 18, there used to be a package called popper.el which I
loved, I hear it may be back as framepop (although I prefer not to make
multiple frames for these things). Basically you could hide/show the
most recent help (any sort of with-temp-buffer) with C-z 1 toggle. It
would do automatic shrinking of the window. You could scroll the temp
window in both directions without moving into it. And you could switch
into that buffer and back directly w/o cycling through all of your
visible buffers.
