Sorry, I should've been clearer.  The recipe I posted will display the
efs-trashes-defadvice-on-find-file-making-it-impossible-to-C-x-C-f
bug.  This is due to efs clobbering viper's defadvice, as you stated.

I haven't had any problems with Gnus, but I have yet to try the
patches for which Steve just reposted pointers to.
