You don't have to mess with this variable

You already _have_ this possibility. /Please/ ceck out custom
(Options->Customize->Emacs->Applications-DisplayTime)
and configure  display-time-form-list. Extensive documentation is
there.

We need a new acronym TTFC instead of RTFM :-)

The background pad will be also more customizable with the latest
patches I sent to Steve.
