Maybe all the folks who are happy with edit-faces would try out the
example I posted to the list just yesterday? OK, interactive changing
and then putting it into the Xdefaults will never trigger such a bug,
but that can hardly be described as being an option for the newbie.

Custom _is_ slow, but this is something that can be worked on. Edit
faces is broken now, and even if it gets better, it will still be
incompatible. More and more packages will use custom. 
Who wants to answer all the bug reports from users asking
"I customized package xxx, but my settings are not used" just because
they also load an .emacs_options afterwards?
