I admit not having looked into it much, but I can offer the following
observation - I tried to use 'custom' to redo the Gnus faces, but gave
up after about 45 minutes of trying. Clicking the 'state' button for
something that was hidden could take up to 3-4 *minutes* to unfold and
make it seen. System was *NOT* heavily loaded - XEmacs modeline and
my xload agreed the system load average was down around 0.3 or so. No
audible disk activity.

Does 'custom' end up calling the system exec() call at all? If so,
this could explain some of it - I'm seeing Gnus hangs reading netnews,
that seem to be linked to running 'uncompface'. It will hang for a
minute, then display the headers (with the picon in place, then hang
again and not display the body until you hit ctl-G.

Oddly enough, I do *NOT* use lazy-lock (though I *do* use font-lock)
unless something is loading it under-the-covers, so I don't think it's
*THAT* famous wedge. Or could it be anyhow? Does anybody have a
quick-and-easy Elisp form for checking if process-input-p (or whatever
it was) is broken? I admit I tossed the posting because I thought "I
dont use lazy-lock, so I'm not worried". Maybe I *should* be worried?
