You're right. It is annoyingly slow. but it *works*, at least better
(which means: more correct) than edit-faces.

Setting families works for me. Click on the attribute and enter the
family name in the edit field behind.

Edit-faces.el *was*, *is* and *will* be broken unless someone fixes it
_and_ makes it compatible with custom (which I don't know how to
achieve). I really don't want to repeat again why. Just one example:

Let's assume you have made your face major-heading to be 36 points big
(and you use 14 for 'default). You want to change 'zmacs-region to be
lightblue instead of the usual grey. You go into edit-faces, change
the background of 'zmacs-region and save this. 

No try to mark a portion of text written in 'major-headings with the
mouse and you will see why it's broken.
