1) I just tried out the adobe fonts distributed with Acroread, as
suggested. After switching from the HP X11R5 fonts (in directory
    /usr/lib/X11/fonts/type1.st) I see a strange effect. I'm using

default Black WhiteSmoke -adobe-courier-medium-r-*-*-*-140-100-100-*-*-iso8859-*
  (default face)

The same exact font as distributed with Acroread, and the one supplied
by HP look different (the HP one looks better).

2) I just showed a novice how to change his default font using the
"Options" menu. Now how does he save this default?
