Yeah, I'll admit its a kludge that's probably not worth it.  Ange-ftp
is one of those critical packages so I'll be willing to bet the change
will bite a lot of people.  Maybe it's better to just include a
prominent notice in the release notes (along with everything else :-).

Hmm, or maybe just have ange-ftp.el raise an error and not try to
wedge in broken compatibility?
