Most novices are going to be editing small files. The hit will not be
a problem. If the sample.emacs showed how to disable it and described
the performance hit, then people could disable it where/when necessary.

Given the ``billions and billions'' of CPU cycles that are consumed
every time I type a character on my X-term, a few hundred thousand
more isn't going to be a big deal.
