Before you blame this on VM, how often are you in buffers with mixed
height fonts?  I think this is a general problem with redisplay.

I've observed similar phenomena, particularly with a piece of the
cursor being left behind, since late in the 19.14 beta days.  All that
appears to be necessary is to mix the heights of the fonts, which I do
by default.
