I remember this slightly differently.  Sandy Rutherford knows for sure.

RMS took Sebastian Kremer's TreeDired 6 and changed the key bindings before
putting into Emacs 19.  Sandy took over TreeDired from Sebastian and continued
developing it as part of EFS and at one point sync'd to RMSs dired...

Personally, I just put the bindings back as God meant them to be...  ;-)
