I confirmed that defining REGEX_MALLOC in regex.c cures the problem.
Perhaps someone could add it as a configure option (--with-regex-malloc ?).
I would, but I don't have or understand autoconf.  I suspect it will be
easily enough added by one of the more experienced folks.
