FWIW, I really like cperl-mode, but I found Ilya extremely difficult
to work with wrt integretating the del/backspace changes... his
response included phrases such as "XEmacs brain damage", etc.

Kudos to you, Karl, for doing the work on cperl-mode.  I wanted to do
some overhauls to it myself but lost heart after my first series of
interactions with him.  I hope that someone with better people skills
than I will have better success in rolling the changes back in to the
main distribution.

Maybe it's time to branch off our own cperl variant?  Kinda scarey,
but worth considering.
