I read that it picks up the initial keysyms from the console defaults
or something...

I've run `xkeycaps', and told it to reset all of the keys to default,
and saved the .xmodmap file it makes. Now I load that when I start,
and might put it in place as the `system wide'[1] default. Maybe
that's what the other folks need to do also?

Without setting things with the .xmodmap-bittersweet file, the key
mapping is different. On bootup, it's loading a console keymap with
`kbd', and a font, for SVGATextMode, which gives me a 132x50 text
console.

Footnotes:
[1] It's a home computer... I get a giggle every time I call it a system.
