Well, but compatibility is pretty much mandatory.  And given how different
the menu-handling routines are in the available Emaxen, you can't do it
with the commands in either one manual; something like easymenu is pretty
much obligatory as well.

I think we're mostly agreed about which menus look and work better.  And
we're mostly agreed about which menu code is more desirable.  What's needed
is an easymenu that adds to, rather than obliterating, the existing menus.
