I've isolated the Red Gnus tm incompatibility to a macro called
`as-binary-input-file' in tl/emu-x20.el, and a redefinition of
nnmail-find-file in tm/gnus-charset.el. I don't know of anything
quicker than rebytecompiling all of tm with Red Gnus ahead of
installed Gnus 5.2.40 in the load-path.
