The signature of XBM tool bars is a white background.  Jens you need
to find out why XPM wasn't detected with this configure/build.  Your
previous build reports[1] indicated they were detected.  Configure
dropped a file called config.log in your top level XEmacs source
directory.  Please check it and see what went wrong when XPM detection 
was taking place.
