 I will apply this to Athens when I compile in a few minutes.

 There is also a problem where when using dynabbrev, it can grab a
string from another buffer, and if that buffer or the string there is
read-only, the string inserted is also.  It can't be removed.  (I
didn't try undo.  Gee.)

 It's happened to me a few times, once in the minibuffer.
