www.yourdomain.com is a just a subdomain of yourdomain.com where the “additional word” is simply www. By convention, the www subdomain is typically set up to point directly to the root domain (yourdomain.com in this example) which is why most people think they are the same thing.yourdomain.com and www.yourdomain.com are, in fact, two completely different domains and could be set up to do different things, but you probably wouldn’t want to do that or you’d risk confusing anybody who expects them to always do the same thing...
