o Keep an on-disk state dump so that the status poller can be
   restarted.

o The monitor itself should be as small as possible.

o It should be possible to assign a priority to "ports where the
cisco description field contains a given pattern", so that if you
use the "description field" on Cisco routers to name the circuits
you can indicate that circuit so-and-so has priority X when it
comes to sort active faults in the user interface.

o The "dns:" and "domain:" settings can be used by the poller to
verify that the specified host still exists and that the IP address
given as the poll address is among the registered IP addresses for
   the router.

Possible extensions:

o Monitor CPU load (on cisco routers)
o Monitor free memory (on cisco routers)
o Monitor error counters, trigger alarm on crossing of
   (configurable?) threshold value
o Check for crashed routers (on cisco), report restarted routers.
o Monitor OSPF neighbor state, report changes.
o Monitor BGP neighbor state, report changes.
