Welcome to the Atelier Web Ports Traffic Analyzer (AWPTA) 1.1
release!

INTRODUCTION
============

Build upon the original idea of AWSPS' Ports Finder feature, which
allows the mapping of Local Ports to applications, AWPTA jumps a
giant step ahead.

* Real-time mapping of ports to processes (applications and...
services)!
* History since boot-time of all TCP, UDP and RAW ports open through
Winsock and respective mapping to processes!
* Log since boot-time of data sent and received (up to 500 MB, but
restricted to 3 MB in the evaluation version) by the
above ports!
* Sophisticated archiving feature allowing to review previous
sessions with the same detail as the current session.

AWPTA collects the data in the background with virtually NO OVERHEAD
for your system!

REQUIREMENTS
============

* PC compatible with 486 processor (Pentium heavily recommended).
* 32 megabytes of RAM (64 megabytes or more recommended).
* Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Millenium Edition, Windows NT (SP4
or later) or Windows 2000.
- If using Windows 95, you shall have installed the Windows Sockets
2.0 for Windows 95 Update, downloadable from Microsoft (ws2setup.exe
or w95ws2setup.exe).
- AWPTA requires Comctl32.dll Version 4.72 or later. If you have
Windows 95 or NT you must install Internet Explorer 4.01 or later to
update the Comctl32.dll.
* Display adapter with 800x600 resolution or better and 256 colors
(High Color or True Color recommended).
* If using Windows NT or 2000 you will need Administrator privileges
to install the AWPTA Provider and for changing the size of the Log
Buffer.

INSTALLING AWPTA 1.1
====================

First, when you unzip the distribution you must run the Setup.exe
to install the program.
Then you must run AWPTA.EXE and select Run/Options.
You may select the Log Buffer size you want to work with. This
defaults to 1 MB, which is usually too small. You may go up to 500 MB
(3 MB in the evaluation version). Your selection of Log Buffer size
will become in force only after rebooting.
You may, as well, select the folder for the Log Buffer. This defaults
to the AWPTA folder.
A good sugestion is to check the option to load AWPTA at startup to
the System Tray.

Then you must install the Provider and accept the invitation for
rebooting.

When Windows comes up again, you may run AWPTA.EXE (or double click
the icon in the System Tray, if it is there), whenever you want, to
check how things are going on.
Press the REFRESH button, then click on the first grid for details on
the process and on the middle grid for data on the socket.

* IMPORTANT NOTE: For safety reasons, when you install the Provider
all the relevant existing Registry settings are exported to a file in
the Backup folder of AWPTA.
This will guarantee that whatever may happen you will always be able
to completely restore the system to a previous good state.
In the unlikely event you will ever need to make use of this
facility, you must NOT (unless you know exactly what you are doing)
double-click the saved file to introduce directly the data into the
Registry because there is also some data that needs to be erased from
the Registry.
You must use the RegRepair.exe program from the Backup folder for
such purpose.

REMOVING AWPTA 1.1
==================

This software will not be uninstalled by simply deleting the AWPTA
folder!

To remove this product, go to Control Panel/Add Remove Programs and
select Atelier Web Ports Traffic Analyzer (v. 1.1) or AWPTA 1.1.
You may also uninstall this program using the Uninstall link in the
AWPTA Start Menu group.

The uninstall will not remove the saved Registry settings file in the
Backup folder. The RegRepair.exe tool will not be removed if the
uninstall fails.
In the very unlikely event of the uninstall failing use the
RegRepair.exe tool (see the previous sections) to restore the
Registry to a known good state.

Notes:
* The Provider will be uninstalled (if it was installed) during the
program removal, so you do not need to uninstall it separately.
* You must reboot after uninstalling the program.
