26AUG03 - The HVDOSBOX.ZIP Package
===============================================================

---------------------------------------------------------------
The HVDOSBOX.ZIP archive should contain the following files:-
---------------------------------------------------------------

   --------------------------------------------------------------
   HVDOSBOX.TXT - This information file
FONTHELP.TXT - Installing Windows' fonts - and web links to
                  information on fonts
   --------------------------------------------------------------
BKUPFONS.BAT - Batch file to Backup Windows FON Files
INSTFONS.BAT - Batch file to Install HVFont FON Files
   --------------------------------------------------------------
HVDOSBox.FON - Windows' HVDOSBox fonts (with dotted ASCII32)
HVDOSBox.FO_ - Alternative HVDOSBox DOS Box fonts
   --------------------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------------------
To install the Windows HVDOSBox Font
---------------------------------------------------------------

You may be able to use the batch file INSTFONS.BAT to install the
font if:-
your Windows setup is reasonably standard, and
you have not previously installed the same HVFont, and
you are comfortable with the command line and batch files.

You will have to reboot Windows before it will recognize the font
if they are installed with the batch file.

Alternatively, you can use the normal Windows font installation
procedure:-

1. UNZIP the archive into one directory and copy the file
HVDOSBox.FON into a DIFFERENT working directory. (Do NOT
use the Windows' font directory as either the UNZIP
target - or working - directory).

2. Go to Control Panel, select the Fonts applet, and select
View, Details, to see the Font Name and Filename.

3. If you are installing the licenced version, first REMOVE any
evaluation version previously installed. To do this:-
     Select the font "Terminal",
(CAUTION: Check that the filename is HVDOSBox.FON.
Several Windows fonts use the Font Name "Terminal".
Make SURE you are removing the CORRECT file.)
Right Click for a Context Menu and select Delete,
Confirm the request to remove the font.

4. While in the Fonts applet, select File, Install New Font.
Navigate to the working directory and select and install the
HVDOSBox.FON file. (The font name will appear as "Terminal").

---------------------------------------------------------------
To install the alternative Windows HVDOSBox Font
---------------------------------------------------------------

The .FO_ file is equivalent to the corresponding .FON file
except that it uses a standard blank SPACE character.

If you find the "grid" effect of the dotted SPACE character
confusing, you can install this font instead. To do so:-

1. Make sure you have backup copies of both versions of the
font files in addition to the copies in the Windows's Font
   directory.

2. Copy the file HVDOSBox.FO_ into a working directory and
rename it (change the extensions from .FO_ to .FON)
   with the command:-
     REN *.FO_ *.FON

3. Go to Control Panel, select the Fonts applet, and select
View, Details, so you can see both the Font Name and
   Filename.

4. Proceed as before to remove the evaluation or standard
version of the font and install the alternative set.

NOTE:
We strongly urge you to TRY the standard HVFont file as
distributed - for at least a week - before switching to the
alternative. (Most HVFont users report that the odd visual
sensation produced by the "dots" quickly disappears, to be
replaced by a recognition of the visual advantage that the
"grid" provides in coding, data entry, etc.)

---------------------------------------------------------------
Should other Windows' Terminal fonts be removed?
---------------------------------------------------------------

Windows' has its own limited set of "Terminal" fonts. You can
remove these if you wish - or just install the HVDOSBox set as
an addition to the existing fonts.

Remember: BACKUP all font files before removing them!
The BKUPFONS.BAT batch file provides one way to do this.

---------------------------------------------------------------
How do I access the HVDOSBox Terminal fonts?
---------------------------------------------------------------

The HVDOSBox Terminal fonts are automatically included in the
list of Bitmap font sizes available from the Fonts tab of a
Properties dialog in a "DOS Box" or Windows Terminal (CMD.EXE)
window - along with the few sizes that Windows itself provides.
(Bitmap fonts are called Raster fonts in Windows NT/2000/XP).
Ensure the "TrueType Only" option is NOT checked.

The HVDOSBox fonts are much clearer and more legible at all
pixel sizes and many additional sizes are available - even in
the Evaluation version (12x27, 16x37, 25x57 etc.). The HVFont's
dotted space character should be obvious in the small font
preview window.

Windows 95/98/Me only include true "Terminal" fonts (like the
HVDOSBox fonts) in the list of bitmap sizes.

Windows NT/2000/XP are more flexible. They will include any
monospaced FON file (meeting some special criteria) in their
list of bitmap fonts available in Terminal mode. Both HVDOSBox
and HVRaster are accepted so you can access font sizes from
either of these packages.
