Revision 4.0! September 1, 1996
(This readme has been optimized for viewing by "Notepad" text editor ;)

What's New?
-More accurate startup screen!
-More accurate startup sound!
-2 new startup screens from the Mac!
-Desktop background video memory saver!
-New "System Folder" icon for "My Computer"
-Removed clock from background...easier to fool friends :)

Ok, so your not willing to shell out 50 of your hard earned dollars on an add-on
files that should have been included with Win95 in the first place. I can
totally understand you feel which is why I made this alternative "Pack". I have
to admit, to do all the things in the instructions is a big pain in the butt,
but if you really want to make your PC look like a Mac it should be worth it.
Something things you may find you can skip and still be satisfied with the Mac
look, it's up to you. I will list everything I have done to make my PC look like
a Mac.

Right now I'm currently using WinMac96. This is a really cool program that makes
a small Mac taskbar at the top of your screen. It is made by Ritchie Chow and
can be downloaded from:
http://www.usyd.edu.au/~rchow/winmac.html
If this address is old by now try using a search engine on the web for WinMac96,
it's worth the effort (IMHO).

This pack includes:
-Mac sounds
-Mac wallpapers
-Mac icons
-Mac font
-Mac startup/ shutdown screens

I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU SCREWING UP YOUR COMPUTER, MAKE SURE YOU WRITE DOWN
FILES OR THINGS YOU CHANGE SO YOU CAN CHANGE THEM BACK LATER. This readme tells
you how to change your computer look to mac but not how to change it back to
windoz. You could theoretically read this backwords to change it back.

Instructions
---------------

1. To install this Pack, first I hope you unzipped the mac95pck.zip file into
an empty directory. Put this directory somewhere permanently, for instance,
in the c:\windows directory.

2. Now take the files Geneva & Chicago and put them in the directory
c:\windows\fonts

Appearance
3. Next rename the file c:\logo.sys to c:\winlogo.sys
rename c:\windows\logow.sys to c:\windows\winlogow.sys
rename c:\windows\logos.sys to c:\windows\winlogos.sys
(these are windoz default startup screens)
NOTE: Some windoz95 systems are setup without a c:\logo.sys file which means you don't
have to rename it. Just put my logo.sys file in c:\ and windoz will recognize it's there
and use it as the default startup screen. Simply remove it to get the old startup screen
back.

4. Now look in the Mac directory and move the file "logo.sys" to
the "c:\" directory. Now move the files logos.sys & logow.sys
to the "c:\windows" directory.
(these are new mac startup screens)

5. Now figure out the resolution on your screen. You most likely have 640x480,
800x600 or 1024x768. Now the only wallpapers that are relevant to you are the
ones that apply to your desktop size. So file wise, look in your Mac directory
for:
640x480 = desk640
800x600 = desk800
1024x768 = desk1024

6. If you are using WinMac96 then you want to go to control panel, display, background,
browse under wallpaper to the mactile.bmp file (in Mac directory) and choose "tile".

7. Now time for a tedious part. Go into control panel, display and choose
appearance. Now edit these fields appropriately. A "/" means the info applies
to the "Font:" section.

3D Objects: light grey/ black
Active Title Bar: dark grey/ Chicago 9 white
Active Window Border: light grey
Application Background: dark grey
Desktop: white
Icon: Geneva 8
Inactive Title Bar: light grey/ Chicago 9 white
Inactive Window Border: light grey
Menu: light grey/ Chicago 9 black
Message Box: Geneva 9 black
*Palette Title: Chicago 9
Selected Items: dark grey/ Chicago 9 white
*ToolTip: white/ Chicago 9 black
Window: white/ black

Icons & Cursors
8. To change the Recycle Bin icon you need to use RegEdit
(c:\windows\regedit.exe).
Open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ CLSID\ {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}\DefaultIcon.
Now you should see 3 String values. The default and full one should be set on the
file "Macfull.ico" and the empty one on "MacEmpty.ico". To modify the location
just right click on the string and choose modify. Now change the (Default) value
to "filename, 0" where filename is the location of the file. So in my full and
default string settings I have:
"C:\Windows\Mac\Macfull.ico,0"

-You can change the words "Recycle Bin" to "Trash" by two methods.
I. You can use the latest version of Micro$ofts TweakUI (power toy) which is
available at their web site. In that program their is a part called "Desktop".
Just click on the words "Recycle Bin" and then rename it. By the way, they have
an option under "Explorer" for light arrows for shortcuts. IMHO they look A LOT
BETTER. Especially for mac icons on your desktop.

II. Using RegEdit (c:\windows\regedit) Simply start RegEdit and go to "Edit".
Do "Find" and use "Recycle Bin". Right click the icon and choose modify.
Rename it "Trash". Now hit F3 to find other entries and edit them also.
There should be about 2 of "Recycle Bin".

9. Now go into control panel, go into mouse, go to the tab pointers, then click
normal select and choose browse. Browse to the file MacPointer in the Mac
directory and choose it. Then click on working in background and browser to the
file MacWait and choose it. Do the same for Busy. Close it.

10. Go in "My computer" and take the "c:\" drive and bring it to the desktop
to create a shortcut. Do the same for the floppy drive "a:\".
Go to the c:\ drive shortcut you put on your desktop and right click the mouse
and choose properties. Then click the tab "shortcut", then click "change icon"
and browse into the Mac directory. Then choose the icon "Macintosh HD".
Follow the same instructions for the Floppy icon except choose the icon
"Floppy Drive".

11. Go to Control Panel, display, Plus!, and choose the "My Computer" icon. Click
"change icon" then browse to the mac directory and choose the icon "My Mac". Click
the button "OK". Now click on the words "My Computer" and rename it to
"System Folder".

Structure
12.
Now arrange your desktop like a Mac (This is the easy part!):
________________________________________________________

My Mac Macintosh HD

 Floppy Drive

 Trash
---------------------------------------------------------

13. Make a Control Panel in your start menu (like a Mac). Go into Start,
Settings, Taskbar. Hit the tab "Start Menu items", then click "Advanced".
Now right click the mouse and make a new folder and call it "Control Panel".
Double click in it, it should be empty. Now leave that area for now & go in
"My Computer", then "Control Panel". Select all of the icons or just the ones
you use most frequently and then move them to the new folder "Control Panel".
Now in the start menu you should have a new Control Panel that is much faster
than the original!

14. This is kinda annoying so I don't use it but you have the option to hide
the taskbar. What it does is sink to the bottom of the screen when your not
using it then you just move the mouse to the bottom of the screen and the bar
comes up. You can find this feature in "Start", Settings, Taskbar, autohide.

Sound
15. Finally, the last steps. Go to control panel and go to sounds. Here is
how I setup my sound events. You can change yours accordingly depending on
which sounds you prefer:

Default
Indigo.wav

Program error
Indigo.wav

Asterisk
Quack.wav

SystemDefault
Sosumi.wav

Exclamation
Indigo.wav

SystemExit
Macstart.wav

Critical Stop
Wild Eep.wav

Question
Wild Eep.wav

SystemStart
Macstart.wav

16. Enjoy your new cool GUI (Graphic User Interface)!!!

-Additional Startup Screens!
The new startup screens are called "smile.sys" & "welcome.sys". Backup your logo.sys file
in your c:\ directory then move one of these files to "c:\". Now rename the one you moved
to logo.sys. Restart your computer to see a new startup screen!

Well, I hope you like the theme, I worked hard on it.
Consider this a tribute to a dying OS which could and should have
been the home OS standard. Keep you fingers crossed for Copeland :) Take care.

Credits:

-Michael Guidry (mxg5310@usl.edu): This is "the man" guys...the one who started the
MacTheme project and contributed a lot to it. I would have had a hard time starting
without him.

-Ritchie Chow: What's a mactheme without the trashcans??? This guy gave me the trash to
give to you all, in a figure of speech ;)

-Reno Filla (Reno.Filla@Student.FH-Magdeburg.DE): A cool new feature in Win95 is animated
startup screens. I completely in dark on how to make them until Reno came along to help
me. Moreover he clued me in on how to make higher rez startup screens.

Notes:

1. Startup and shutdown screens are still somewhat pixelated & distorted because of the
win95 resizing effect. Unfortunately, this is unavoidable.

2. I only have access to a American version of the MacOS and Win95 operating system
therefore I cannot support foreign OS's. Specifically, the U.S. fonts may not work on
foreign systems...sorry I wish I could do something about this.

3. Because the desktop background has to be bitmap file it is basically a graphic/video
memory hog. So if things are a bit to slow with this background you can choose an
alternative background that hardly uses any memory but doesn't have the
"File Edit View Label Special" at the top. To use it just go to control panel, display,
background, browse under wallpaper to the mactile.bmp file (in Mac directory) and choose
"tile".

4. Some characters like 1/2 did not translate from Mac to PC font-wise so you may
occasionally see funny symbols for some characters.
