Simple kites, simple old idea, but an effective display. Stafford Wallace: Stafford is the undisputed king of the Indian Fighter kite in the UK, with a growing band of diciples in the art and is increasingly gaining international recognition. He is one of the most pleasant fliers that you could ever hope to meet. He gets his kites custom made especially for him in India and sells them mostly through a small stall that he runs at UK festivals. I suspect that Stafford is the only person who is getting Indian fighters custom built to the highest standard in quantity for sale in the West, so as a service to rec.kites, I have included details of the kites, prices and how to get hold of Stafford: Tissue Kites: Plain standard size 3.00 Plain large size 3.50 Patterned Small, Standard, Large 3.50 Patterned Tournament size 7.50 Very fancy Tournament size 12.50 Very fancy Indian star 12.50 Mylar Kites Thin foil standard 4.00 Thick foil standard 7.50 Thick foil large 9.50 Indian cotton 900m 8.50 Wooden reel 11.00 Guide to Flying Indian Fighter Kites 1.50 All prices are pounds retail in UK. Export prices will no-doubt require currency and shipping surcharges. Don't be put off by the low prices - these are probably the best Indian fighters you will find! Write to Stafford at: 25 Main Street, Empingham, Rutland, LE15 8PR, UK Phone him on +44 780 460 389, but don't forget the time-difference and remember that most weekends he's at a kite festival! Just to put those prices in perspective you can buy tissue kites in India for Rs4 for a cheap one, Rs10 for a good one (8p to 20p). No criticism of Stafford intended, I'm sure he's selling them at a price which isn't making him rich - it just illustrates the wierd world economy in which we live. -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Paul Oldham | "Always park in the shade" | Tel: +44 252 860090 Yateley, Hants, UK | G Graveline | Fax: +44 794 322743 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Mon, 18 Apr 1994 20:38:49 -1000 From: andrew@tug.com (Andrew Beattie) Message-Id: Organization: /usr/lib/news/organisation Subject: Re: Red Arrows & Fighters Paul@bizanal.demon.co.uk writes: >Just to put those prices in perspective you can buy tissue kites in >India for Rs4 for a cheap one, Rs10 for a good one (8p to 20p). No >criticism of Stafford intended, I'm sure he's selling them at a price >which isn't making him rich This is a fair point, so let me tell you the whole story. Stafford's kites are made to a higher standard than those for the Indian home market. I would blindy guess that they would sell in India for maybe somewhere between 50p and 1 pound - far more than the market could bear, regardless of how good they are. A by the time that you have got a low-value item to a retail sale in the West, a 5-fold (say 70p -> 3.50) increase is perfectly reasonable.
