I have been a reader of REC.KITS for some time now and there is always
the question about who fly in what area.
Like:
I am in Kansas City and would like to know if there are any
	kite flyers around.

So I have been thinking about this and if we could get a WEB site to
put the file up for download I would keep the database. The file could
be in a DBF format or just a plan text file. If you wanted you name in
the file just Email me and I could add it to the database.

Suggest information for the file.

	Name , first and last
	Email address.
	State.
	Country.
	Zip Code.
	Area of and City name.
	Type of flying you do.
	Level of flyer.

Example:
Bill Huber
wlhuber@airmail.net
Texas
USA
76180
North Fort Worth
Stunt kits 2 and 4 line
Beginner

Think about it, you are going on vacation and could send some one in
your vacation area a note and meet a new flyer and get in a little
flying. You are moving and want to get to know flyers in your area.

Lets kick it around and if people want to do it, all we need is a Web
site and I am ready to go.

Bill Huber suggests a database of kiters so we can know who
is where.

Nice idea, Bill - especially since you are willing to do the
work. Thanks! But to save you a LOT of effort, let me tell
you that this database already exists.

The AKA membership directory lists 5,000 members in the USA and
around the world. They are listed alphabetically, with address,
phone numbers, and email addresses 9when available).

The directory also lists all members geographically. This means
you can look up Winnamucka WY in the directory and will find
a list of all the AKA members there.

Joining AKA cost $20 a year. You get the directory, $100,000
of insurance whenever you fly, a newsletter/magazine every
two months, a 10 0iscount in most kite stores, and several
other benefits.

Hope that helps.

But what about the rest of the world! We have 3500 members and I
would guess that if 50f them were AKA members it would be a
lot.

Unless of course:

a) Our members are not kitefliers

or

b) Rec.kites is only for America

Lets take a look at the original idea again, because it seems like its
getting lost - the original poster ( An American ) wanted a way of
finding out who the flyers *in his area* were, wanted to use a Web
site to do it, and offered his services to maintain a database. I'd
say David's response was appropriate.

It certainly wouldn't cater for the average British flyer, but then
why should it ? As you point out, if that were an objective ( and it
certainly doesn't need to be), using a combination of different
databases would be necessary, although I wasn't aware that the KSGB
directory was presently available even to KSGB members.

So, are the AKA and/or KSGB willing to act on Bill's initiative ? This
issue, and related ones, have been discussed here before. I think
there are two main problems here :

1. Its one thing to give your details on the understanding that they
will be distributed or sold to other members, quite another to publish
them for worldwide public consumption. I would certainly object
strongly if I was not at least given the chance to remove my details
>From any such list. If this were to be done, it would be an
administrative overhead that I'm sure the relevant organisations could
do without.

2. Organisations tend to perceive such lists as important assets, and
are hence reluctant to distribute them freely. As David makes clear,
the opportunity to get this list can be presented as a selling point
for the organisation concerned.

So unfortunately I think this idea, good though it may be from the
individual flier's perspective, isn't going to happen any time soon.
The time-honoured method of posting a cry for company to r.k still
seems like the best bet.

Well I am going to do it. I have the web site started and the database
is nothing, I can do that in 15 min.

I have taken off the level of flyer, who needs it.

As soon as I get the page working and working right I will post the
address for all. It will be a start.....
