Will you please check carefully the following extract from the 
POINTER I post regularly to rec.kites to be sure I have got the 
address and path correct.  

The last time I checked out ftpmail at decwrl's mail server to the 
new archive site I got an inaccessible response.  :-(

 2.  ARCHIVES  &  MIRROR SITES

ARCHIVES are located at ftp.hawaii.edu and available via anonymous
ftp.  To send material directly to the archives, use the address
kite@ftp.hawaii.edu.   Archive maintenance is usually done once a
week, so it may be several days before GIFs, etc., are available.

Kevin Mayeshiro (kevin@hawaii.edu) maintains the archives.

Path for archives is pub/rec/kites.

The address is valid, but your ftpmail example appears to be incorrect.  
In your pointer to the archives, you suggest the following:  

  Using your own name and email address send the following 
  message to ftpmail@decwrl.dec.com:

    reply cfbd@southern.co.nz
    connect kites.its.Hawaii.Edu/pub/kites
            ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
    chdir pub/kites/faq
    dir

The correct form should read: 

    reply cfbd@southern.co.nz
    connect kites.its.Hawaii.Edu
            ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
    chdir pub/kites/faq
    dir

I submitted a test message to ftpmail@decwrl.dec.com six hours ago, 
but at the time of submission it was number 2164 in the queue.  
It may take some time to verify my thoughts on the subject.  
BTW  It is perfectly acceptable to send me a e-mail message about 
these matters...
