Headspin huh?

The Black rainbow Ventex special edition was a fun thing we did that went
over very well!

Only 50 were made signed by Christoph and I.

Because of the large showing we made at ECSKC with the Tramontana Action
Tour and bring Andy and Christoph over, renting a 300'x300 field just for
us in the center of the whole event, introducing many new fliers and the
list goes on.... I thought it would be great to offer these kites for the
Auction. #1,2,3,&4.
#4 went first for 120 I think, #3 for 140, #2 for 175 and #1 for 205!!!!
Considering that kite lists for 170 those prices are pretty good.

I was concerned at the first one going so cheap, but it was an auction
were most kites go for wholesale price. Even the #4 going for 120 was
pretty good.

I'm glad I brought some pleasure to you by letting you witness my head
spin. Just be lucky I did'nt get any pea soup on you.

Have fun

Dodd

Hell, I wouldn't pay the sticker price for a kite that Dod had defaced...

Sorry Dodd, I was excited to get #4 for a good price. I didn't see the
pea soup fly and you were gracious when you congratulated me.

I think the black rainbow is a pretty kite (since 1st seeing Sandy's white
rainbow, I'd been telling him that it should have been made with black
instead of white...lMHO looks sharper). Michael (who got #3) and I had
fun flying them last Saturday at Jones Beach and got the usual questions
about are we professionals, how much do they cost and where can they be
bought. So as 1 friend who manufactures another kite said that kites
going cheap at auctions don't upset him. He considers it a benifit for
the competitors and still gets his products out in competent hands to be
seen by John or Jill Q. Public who can't usually distinguish between a
Master or Novice flyer at the park or beach.

Now my question is what rods did you have in the Jam Sessions on the demo
video? Where the stock rods?

P.S. how do I get a Jam Session pin? :-)

Some years ago, when I was manufacturing the big Force 10 Delta Wing
monster, I made one for the Auction at a AKA Convention. It was so
beautiful, all inlay, that they put it right over the podium where all
the heavy-weights get up and speak for a day or two. I thought for sure
it would bring in the big money. I was so proud just to see it over the
podium. But no, it brought in about $250.00. I started to cry and even
wet my new Depends I had on at the time. I had to quickly run out and
change them, so as not to embarress myself in front of my peers.

But, I didn't flip out or anything. I just quietly went up to my room
and tried to stick a 505 spar into my arm.

For those who don't know me, the part about the Depends and below was
just a joke.

To Dodd and Steve and all of the other Manufactures and retailers who
continually donate to kite raffles and auctions, we all owe a large amount
of THANKYUO's! Without their support, many kite events would not take
place.

We, as kite fliers and consumers, often think that, "Hey, they're business
people making lots of money off kites." Having been associated with several
other types of both retail and proffessional service businesses, as well as
with a small part of the "kite trade" in an advisory role only, I would like
to let you all know that no one selling kite products, wholesale or retail,
is getting rich easy at all. Thousands of other product lines would offer a
much greater return on their monetary and time investments. They are selling
kites because they love kite flying. There are lots of easier, far less
risky and tempramental ways to make money. Did you know that a typical
clothing specialty shop will start out with a 300markup (75margin). When
they have a 50learance sale they still have a profit margin at or greater
than what a kite retailer starts out with!

If kite auction prices are low (typical), I feel that it is more a
reflection of the cheapness of the attendees than any reflection on the
quality of the products donated by the more than generous manufacturers and
retailers.

<snip>

I agree that the jam sessions with the black stripes went for a good
price and were excellent buys! The problem I had at the auction was
the fact that they were the first 4 of a run of ? (who knows how
many). If those 4 were the only ones made ever, I think they would
have gone for more money.

I saw some of the same reactions from Dodd and the HQ team at MASKC.
They were disappointed about the price their kites went for and I bad
felt for them. They've spent a lot of time and effort in bringing
these kites to the market. I can only imagine the let down, If a kite
I made didn't go for the retail value or over, at an auction.

The fact seems to be that at auctions, kite flyers want the one of the
following:

1) the one of a kind kite with special graphics
2) The newest kite (The Rage) with go marketing behind it.
(PS: If Anyone names a kite after "The Rage" let me know :)
3) Rok or Fighter kites seem to go fast at high dollars too.
4) Kite Bags, Line Bags (Hey folks, no one can have enough of these)
5) Any piece of equipment that proclaims you King, Queen, Prince,
Princess, Duke, Duchess, Etc... of the Wind (i.e. MASKC Auction) :)

The average production run kites don't seem to bring many dollars. If
people can buy them tomorrow from any kite store for the same price or
less, they normally will.

I, on the otherhand, can be a very impulsive buyer, so any or all of
the above don't apply to me ;)

Dodd and all the other kind folks who donate gear to auctions and
raffles: THANK YOU! Your gifts support and enhance every event. One of
the great things about an auction is that one can walk away with a
bargain while still contributing a chunk of money to a good cause. Maybe
a raffle would be a better fundraiser for this event. Lots of folks will
buy $40 or $50 worth of raffle tickets for a shot at some great prizes
(the raffle at the Ft. Worden Kitemakers Workshop brings in thousands of
dollars). But hey, that means somebody walks away with a $200 kite for
$1!!! Dodd, Paul, Steve, and all the rest of you who donate goodies for
us to win, Thanks again.

Cheers, George

Not completely true, Mike. If only clothing specialty stores had a 300
markup. Most only 'keystone'(double) the wholesale cost of their
inventory. Which mean, after overhead, actual profit margins are between
10 and 25 I'm in both worlds, both as a retailer(Screamin' Tuna Surf
Shop-11 years) and Force 10 Foils(5 years). Some of us aren't getting
rich financially, but for me, I feel rich that I can have a lifestyle
that includes flying kites, and getting paid for it. That is true
wealth.

Actually, they announced that it was 1, 2, 3 or 4 of a limited run of 50
AND the kites are marked that way.

ABSOLUTELY, in the colours that they want, too. And with discount
sellers, I don't know anyone who buys kites for list more than once or
twice.
