The AKA Newsletter Editor/Publisher Request for Proposals BACKGROUND KITING, the official newsletter of the American Kitefliers Association, is published six times a year during the odd numbered months. Its circulation of approximately 4,500 copies goes to members, inter-club exchanges, retail merchants, and others interested in the hobby of kite flying. Designed in an 8 1/2" by 11" format, KITING is printed in black ink on white paper with the exception of a four-page color insert that covers the annual convention in the November issue. Pictures are included in each 28-32 page issue. Advertise-ments, limited by Board of Directors mandate to one third of the total copy area, pay for part of the cost of production. JOB DESCRIPTION The Editor/Publisher will be responsible for all facets of producing the bi-monthly newsletter including soliciting and writing articles, editing and proofreading submitted materials, typesetting and page design, and coordination with the printer for completion of the final publication. The Editor/Publisher is also responsible for the solicitation and occasional production of advertisements and the necessary financial accounting of advertising revenue. CHAIN OF COMMAND The focus and direction of KITING is set by the Board of Directors. The production of the newsletter is overseen by the Executive Director who supervises the Editor/Publisher. The appearance and style of the newsletter is normally the responsibility of the Editor/Publisher with input from both the Board and Executive Director. PHILOSOPHY KITING is the major avenue of communication between AKA and its members. As such, it should reflect the goals and objectives of the AKA as outlined in the association by-laws. As much as possible, the newsletter should be a "stand alone" financial entity, paying for itself by advertisements, the sale of mailing lists, and inserts. The person(s) chosen for the position will be responsible for initiating steps to limit the financial burden placed on the AKA by the production of KITING. REQUIREMENTS To be considered, proposals must show: * the education and/or experience needed to meet all elements of the position, i.e writing, editing, desk top publishing, and bookkeeping. * the ability to deal with volunteers and with prospective advertisers. * possession of or immediate access to the needed equipment and supplies to publish KITING. * a working knowledge of kite flying. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Each proposal should contain the applicant's ideas and suggestions for making KITING as financially independent as possible. COMPENSATION The current AKA budget for KITING includes separate line items for production, printing, and mailing of the newsletter. Proposals should outline expected production personnel costs. Either a set reimbursement fee schedule or a combined reimbursement fee/commission on the sale of advertising schedule will be considered. QUESTIONS? All questions should be directed to Mel Hickman at (503) 717-0627 or email at lomond@aol.com. DEADLINES Proposals received after September 15, 1995, will not be considered. Proposals should be sent to AKA Newsletter Editor/Publisher, HCR 63 Box 851, Seaside, OR 97138-9704 = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
