It depends on the game whether you would want to bother with the
conversions.  For example, most Infocom collections come with Zork I
release 88, not the Solid Gold version.  The Solid Gold version has built
in hints, and the parser understands more abbreviations and such.  The
same kind of thing was done with Wishbringer, Planetfall, and Leather
Goddesses of Phobos.  In the case of LGOP, a nifty cheat was added to let
one bypass the catacombs maze (which is right up their with the Royal
Puzzle in Zork III in terms of difficulty.)  Also, Planetfall and
Wishbringer incorporated some of the documentation into the game.  The
others are mainly for historical interest.  For example, there are patches
to make betas of Trinity and a few others.  The beta of Trinity is quite
different from the final version and there are minor changes in others.
Zork I has the most revisions and some of the early ones have different
text and weird bugs.  See the Infocom Bugs list to get an idea about that.
