As someone pointed out to me after the walkthrough was completed, it 
seems to me that if you go northeast from Quite an Undertaking, then go 
east and west, the staff appears.  I haven't gone to the trouble of 
seeing if this connection is true, but if it is I should probably make a 
note of that in the walkthrough.  If it isn't true, then I guess we've 
got a fairly arbitrary puzzle here.
