Just to be the annoying guy who pulls out the counterexample to the
counterexample, there was quite a bit of work a few years back in
semi-triangular wheels (basically, three arcs, rather than three flat
sides).  By staggering the points appropriately, they handle rough
terrain far better than traditional wheels.

Not that this is entirely relevant--just that every once in a while,
advances do happen in the unlikely spots.  However, you'll note that
they started with an *existing* wheel, rather than trying to figure
out how to reduce the load on the thing they were dragging along...
